Urban green spaces are the only places where city dwellers regularly encounter biodiversity. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that interactions with the natural environment are important for human health and well-being.

The personal and societal benefits of experiencing nature are varied, but include better self-reported general health, reduced mortality from circulatory diseases, enhanced longevity, stress-relief, improved cognitive functioning, increased social interaction and lower crime rates.

However, the particular qualities of urban green spaces that offer the greatest advantages to humans remain poorly defined. A study investigated these relationships focusing on birds, which are often the most recognizable, visible and charismatic component of urban wildlife.

Participants reported higher psychological well-being in green spaces that supported more bird species and in sites with a higher overall abundance of birds.
