Urban green spaces are the only places where city dwellers
regularly encounter biodiversity. There is a growing body of evidence
suggesting that interactions with the natural environment are important for
human health and well-being.
The personal and societal benefits of experiencing nature
are varied, but include better self-reported general health, reduced mortality
from circulatory diseases, enhanced longevity, stress-relief, improved
cognitive functioning, increased social interaction and lower crime rates.

Participants reported higher psychological well-being in
green spaces that supported more bird species and in sites with a higher overall
abundance of birds.
